The irresistible musical comedy The Boy Friend is set in the 1920’s at Madame Dubonnet’s fashionable finishing school in Nice on the sun-kissed French Riviera, where young ladies are schooled in the finer arts of ‘marrying well’.
But these young ladies dream only of boyfriends and parties. English heiress Polly falls in love with Tony the delivery boy, but recalling her father’s warning to beware fortune seekers, poses as Madame Dubonnet’s secretary. However, Tony has a secret of his own… he is hiding from his wealthy parents Lord and Lady Brockhurst.
Things get hilariously complicated when Polly’s father Percival arrives in Nice only to discover that Madame Dubonnet is his former flame, and Tony’s parents unexpectedly arrive in Nice.
Could a happy ending be only a Charleston away?
The Boy Friend by Sandy Wilson first appeared on Broadway in 1954. The role of Polly was performed by the then-newcomer, Julie Andrews and set her path to stardom. Featuring 17 musical numbers including the memorable ‘Won’t you Charleston with me? and ‘I Could Be Happy With You’, with an on stage three-piece jazz band and an all female scat trio.
